Unsolicted commercial email is referred to in the Internet community as "spam".
EONI has been hard at work fighting to keep the spam out of your eoni.com email account.
Today we made a couple of changes requiring that all email servers that talk to our email servers have a "reverse DNS entry". This has been requirement we have tested off and on for the past year..and it helps prevent some spam. This helps to prevent rogue IP servers from sending email.
Another technique implemented today is called "greylisting". Greylisting causes our email servers to delay acceptance of email from places (IP addresses) that we have not heard from in the past few weeks. So how does greylisting fight spam? Well...many senders of spam are trying to send emails just as fast as they can...meaning they do not retry the sending of spam when they are on a spam sending run. Many spammers do not retry. This little change may seem so minor...however anything we can do to reliably cut the spam you see is our goal.
To use the features discussed in this article you do not need to do anything. These two measures added today are in addition to other techniques we actively use to cut your spam volume. The other technique we can discuss is our use of real-time lists that contain lists of servers known to send spam. These real-time lists are updated around the clock by several organizations around the world. EONI email servers screen each incoming email sender (the sender's email server IP address) against the real-time lists to make sure that if other locations see spam from the sender's email server IP we will refuse to accept email as well.
All of the spam countermeasures discussed in this article are applied automatically to all eoni.com email account at no charge. In addition all email to eoni.com email accounts is scanned automatically for viruses in the email message at no additional charge. These techniques cut greater than 75% of the spam coming in to your eoni.com email box.
With all of these efforts some email still does not get caught as spam with our included outer defense layers. To get more tools to control your email account customers can request our spam filter service for a $1 month (the fee provides email filter service to all email boxes on your account so you do not have to pay $1 for each email account). The spam filter service adds additional layers of protection and you can learn more about the service here.
EONI also monitors the flow of email in from the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays. We know how long it takes to get a message out to the Internet and to get a message in from the Internet. How? We send email out and time email incoming every 10 minutes. In the event that the time to send and receive email is too many seconds we page our local on call technician to resolve or escalate the issue.
We work around the clock to keep your EONI services running!
